Music Licensing in Canada

The following agencies administer music licensing in Canada.
Click on the links provided to be taken directly
to their Websites for more information.

AVLA
Audio / Video Licensing Agency Inc.

The AVLA Audio Video Licensing Agency Inc. is a non-exclusive agent that administers licensing in Canada for the owners and exclusive holders of copyright in audio and music video recordings. AVLA licenses the exhibition and duplication of music videos as well as the duplication of audio recordings.   AVLA is the licensing agent of all the major record companies in Canada as well as many independent labels, artists and producers.  AVLA's principals own or control the copyright of over 95% of all musical audio recordings and music videos produced and/or distributed in Canada.

Anyone who duplicates sound recordings or music videos and anyone who performs or broadcasts music videos requires a license from the AVLA or authorization from the owner or holder of the copyright.  The unlicensed duplication of sound recordings or music videos and/or the unlicensed exhibition of music videos are an infringement of the copyright and may be subject to legal prosecution.

All CAMEO members are educated in the details of this licence and will carry and display this licence as needed.

SOCAN
Society of Composers, Authors
and Music Publishers of Canada

SOCAN is a performing rights society.  Its role is to license the users of music in return for copyright fees.  It then distributes these fees as royalties to SOCAN members in Canada and the thousands of foreign music copyright owners whose works the society also licenses in Canada.

Fees for SOCAN are usually required to be paid by the person/organization that is renting the facility.  The fee may be included as part of the rental fee or added on as a separate item on your invoice.  The performing DJ KJ or Band is NOT required to pay this fee and should not be charging you for the fee.  If you have any questions about the SOCAN fee, contact a CAMEO executive member or SOCAN directly.
