Q & A
What are those extra charges that you may encounter when renting a hall for a party or wedding reception?Firstly there is a
possibility that you will hear the terms... AVLA or
SOCAN. These are organizations that protect the interest of the
various musicians, writers, etc... Typically, you may be charged
a SOCAN fee by the event hall, or hidden in the rental cost, or might
not be applicable for your event. Check out the detailed information
on the Music Licensing
page. Don't want to use the 'HOUSE' DJ service? The DJ service that is 'part' of your rental package may or may not be a good choice. You need to ask questions about who will be performing one of the most important and critical functions of your event - especially for a wedding reception. Check out the How to Hire a DJ/KJ page for the important questions to ask. Some halls may add
a 'hydro surcharge' to the rental contract for out-sourcing your entertainment
service when you choose not to use their IN-HOUSE DJ. CAMEO contacted
Ontario Hydro and asked them to calculate what an average DJ sound system
would cost - using current hydro rates they determined that an average
8 hour performance would cost the hall about $1.30. Some high powered
sound systems with fog/lighting packages could increase this to approx.
$2.50 Skirting of the DJ Table?Professional DJ set-ups
may require one or two skirted tables. The table(s) should be skirted
as the DJ needs to conceal wiring, equipment etc... Some halls may
add a small charge for providing linens for the DJ table(s). Coming Soon... Do I have to pay for
dinner for the DJ or Entertainment Services?
